LEGION REGATTAS 2020

There are two regattas planned for 2020

EDITED 16/01/2020*

  1. 26th April 2020 – This is the main LEGION MASTERS REGATTA. It was booked for Lake Karapiro but the Committee is considering moving this back to Lake Rotoroa (Hamilton) this year. More about that here *
  2. 29th August 2020 – The pre-NZ Masters regatta where you get a chance to flex your muscles and eye up the competition for  the upcoming Rowing NZ Masters Championship Regatta in September. This regatta will be held on the 1000m, laned course at Karapiro.

Proposed Changes

The Legion of Rowers Committee are looking into the possibility of returning to Lake Rotoroa at Innes Common, HAMILTON for our forthcoming April Masters Regatta. It has been recognised that our ability to sponsor JUNIOR ROWERS has been severely compromised by the cost of holding the Legion April Regatta at Karapiro.

It is still our intention to run the Masters August Regatta on the Karapiro 1000m course as a warm-up and prelude to the NZ Masters Championships at Karapiro in mid-September 2020.

Note: The Legion April Regatta is being held on Sunday 26th April due to restrictions placed on commercial and sporting activities on ANZAC Day. As 2020 is the first year that Anzac Day is being “Mondayised”, Monday 27th April will be a National Holiday, allowing for a leisurely return home for those with longer distances to contend with.

We would appreciate your feedback AS SOON AS POSSIBLE about this change of venue.

We see the positives, aside from the financial already mentioned, as…

  • Reverting to the low-key friendly and sociable regatta over an 800 metre course
  • Our intention is to apply for a liquor licence and operate our famous Legion BBQ following the end of the day’s racing
  • Trophies and medals will be awarded during the BBQ

In the meantime we will leave our Karapiro regatta reserved date in place.
